Going into "Game Night (2018)," I had tempered expectations, bracing myself for a mildly amusing yet forgettable romp. However, I walked away pleasantly entertained. The film leans into its absurd premise with gusto, offering a refreshing balance of situational comedy and surprising twists. While it may not redefine the comedy genre, it manages to keep its audience engaged with clever writing and well-timed gags.

Game Night

Lead Chemistry That Shines

Jason Bateman and Rachel McAdams' undeniable chemistry beautifully anchors the film. They are charming and hilarious as Max and Annie, elevating the humor with their impeccable timing and natural rapport. Be it the banter of competitiveness or navigating the chaos of this "game night gone wrong," they bring with them a sense of relatability that keeps the story pretty grounded.

Jesse Plemons Steals Every Scene

Jesse Plemons as the socially awkward neighbor Gary is an absolute highlight. Playing what feels like a heightened version of himself, Plemons’ deadpan delivery and eerie intensity provide some of the film’s funniest moments. His character’s unsettling presence adds a layer of unpredictability, and every scene he’s in is a comedic gem. It’s safe to say that watching Jesse Plemons play Jesse Plemons is something we’ll never grow tired of.

A Fun, If Not Groundbreaking Experience

While Game Night does not claim the title of "comedy of the year," it's most assuredly entertaining. It balances hilarious one-liners with a somewhat genuine mystery angle. The well-played and action-filled comic scenes look really nice visually. However, some of the jokes bomb completely, and some of the characters do feel a bit underdeveloped. Luckily, that just does not take away from the entire experience that much.

A Summary Worth Smiling About

Game Night delivers more than expected, offering a solid mix of humor, heart, and hijinks. With standout performances-particularly from Bateman, McAdams, and Plemons-and a premise that stays engaging from start to finish, it's a movie that's easy to recommend. While it's not a comedy masterpiece, it's a delightful watch that leaves you smiling, which is exactly what a good game night should do.
